Valentine’s Day Ideas From Christmas 101’s Rick Rodgers

Rick Rodgers, author of my favorite cookbook, Christmas 101, is my go-to source for festive foods that say “I love you!” As Valentine’s Day is suddenly SO close, I asked him what he recommends to put something delectable on the taste buds of our dear ones.

"Any little treat is going to be appreciated by your special person,” he assures us. “In my house, chocolate-covered cherries or a box of Sweetheart candies say ‘I Love You’ without breaking the bank. Of course, a home-baked dessert is especially welcome at Valentine's. I make Punschtorte, a Viennese dessert that we learned to love on our first trip to Middle Europe. No one in America makes it, so I have to make it myself if I want to enjoy a slice."

Ooh, Punschtorte! Feeling adventurous? Rick will teach you how to make this European delight this Saturday at 1:00pm! Good timing!

Here’s a description of the class:

Every bakery in Vienna and Budapest makes this heady confection of sponge cake layered with a colorful filling of rum-soaked crumbs. Boozy and indulgent, its pretty in pink icing makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day. Rest assured that when you serve this, your guests will probably have never had it before, unless they are world travelers.

THIS IS A DEMONSTRATION CLASS. RECIPES ARE SENT OUT 24 HOURS BEFORE CLASS. Rick will teach you:

•The tricky ”warm” method for making genoise cakes

•An easy poured fondant for covering the cakes and tips for the best results

•Techniques for scheduling the cake production for efficient assembly

•The special method for building this triple-layer cake with its unique rum-crumb filling.
